The Accountant 2 Review – Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal
Here’s my The Accountant 2 review which stars Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal and directed by Gavin O’Connor and distributed by Warner Bros Pictures PH!
Christian Wolf returns for another serving of coolness that only the Accountant can provide and rather than just a generic job, this outing is a bit more personal and definitely needs back up in the form of his younger brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal). The two try to get back into each other’s lives while solving the murder of Christian’s friend and former operative Ray King AND solve the mystery of the woman whom King was also investigating before getting killed.
Alright, the biggest request I had from the first Accountant movie was we needed more screentime between Christian and Braxton. Their interaction in the first film was so cute, imagine two trained killers who also happen to be close siblings find themselves in the middle of a fight and realizing who they were up against decide to team up. That was so nice to watch. And now years later, they are doing it for an entire film and that’s even more adorable.
Affleck’s still got the size and the charisma to play this role and he takes it to new heights too which is nice. We’re still getting a glimpse of the character we met in the first movie but they definitely decided to make him grow. Meanwhile Bernthal’s Braxton comes into the scene and he proxies as us as we show the leaps and bounds that the on-the-spectrum Christian is manifesting. That’s also one of the reasons that Braxton’s mostly all smiles in the film, he’s seeing a new side to his big brother that he’s never seen before.
We also have a rather commendable cast for The Accountant 2 with Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World, Cowboy Bebop) as Anaïs, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Marybeth Medina and J. K. Simmons as Raymond King. Among them it’s really Addai-Robinson that moved the story further and helped us get to that softer side of The Accountant.
Meanwhile I also had a slight crush on Daniella Pinada so that’s always a win although I would have wanted more from her role. Regardless her character was pretty bad ass but I really just wish they wrote in an entire action scene between Batman Wolf and Pineda’s character.
The most appealing part for me from the first film remains intact and has been fortified and that’s the fact that this is still a stealth Batman movie. Not only is he Batman, he’s the gun-toting Grim Knight and he’s also working together with The Punisher.
You see that in so many aspects throughout the film from going on detective mode to figure out what Ray King was investigating, to constantly being in contact with his own version of Oracle / Barbara Gordon to having not a single care when it comes to money.
Then there’s also that sick motorcycle and that tough as hell truck (although that eventually broke down too but still). My point and that one great thing for me is still here.
I also wasn’t expecting the film to be funny. Nor was I expecting the film to have this unofficial set piece be Affleck square dancing and employing his character’s genius to impress a lady. Wasn’t also expecting to have a classic 90s and 80s effect where they stop a fistfight scene with a freeze frame because that’s exactly what they did here.
The action scenes were also cool to watch and meticulously made. Affleck and Bernthal had no right to be this good together as a two-man army but they did it well. Whether is a regular fist fight to showing off their characters’ expertise when it comes to firearms, they work extremely well.
Verdict: 10
The Accountant 2 was a fun action romp. It’s a perfect “bro movie” that has a lot of great moments whether it’s comedy or action. It did start a little slow but they pay off is pretty good. I want to be spoiled with a third movie because I feel we can still get a lot of adventures from these two brothers. The Accountant 2 also polishes up some unclear plot points from the first movie while also at the same time making the world they operate on a lot bigger. Daniella Pineda could have been given more but what she got was still OK.
Special thanks to Warner Bros Pictures for the screening.
