Reborn # 1 Review
Doing a Reborn # 1 review from Image Comics written by Mark Millar (Kick Ass, Wanted, Ultimates) with art by Greg Capullo (Batman).
If existential questions and metaphysics is something that interests you then this high-profile project from Millar and Capullo would definitely be your cup of tea.
The premise for Reborn in a sentence is that when you die, you get sent to the afterlife where there’s a never-ending war with different creatures and locations. Our heroine basically needs to find her husband in this warzone filled with aliens and monsters and ultimately save the afterlife from destruction.
Reborn # 1 Review Pros
- The book features stunning artwork by Greg Capullo. If you’re a fan of the man’s work at DC Comics’ main ‘Batman’ book then you’ll be in for a treat.
- Mark Millar has another exciting concept here with this project. It’s a simple concept and somewhere in the middle of my first read through I had to say “goddamn, why didn’t I think of this”.
- Loved the look at life and how it subtly reminds us to not waste a damn second because time is a gift.
- The book sucks you into the fantasy world with a great twist, and its not those gory, evil shock endings we usually get from a Mark Millar book. It’s rather a tearful and emotional cliffhanger.
- The designs for the creatures here in the book are superb. I mean just look at Bonnie Black’s dog in the afterlife, how armored that doggie is.
- The hard questions go front and center here in this issue. What happens to us when we die? What is life really about? What happens when we get the big “C” or when we face death.
Reborn # 1 Review Cons
- The pacing is a bit slow for Millar’s book. Too many questions but that’s OK because this was the first issue anyway.
- In all honesty, the book is awesome as it is and we want more pages. We also need a lot of companion stories for the title.
- Reborn also has this penchant to drop everything from the real world narrative, would be nice to see that same monologue from Bonnie’s real world tossed into her new adventure in the afterlife.
VERDICT
10/10
We want more of Reborn. Image Comics has a sure winner here.
