Epson, WWF-Philippines call attention to the importance of collective action in addressing energy consumption

MANILA, Philippines — Epson Philippines maintains a strong collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines to tackle diverse environmental issues. Since the partnership began in 2022, Epson and WWF-Philippines have implemented numerous cooperative efforts aimed at preserving the nation’s biodiversity, promoting the sustainable utilization of renewable natural resources, and minimizing pollution and excessive consumption. Their most recent project underscores the critical need for collective measures to manage the rising energy consumption rate in the Philippines through efficient energy management strategies.

Dino Calderon, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program Manager at WWF-Philippines, reveals that the Philippines is facing a growing energy management problem, with the residential sector being one of the major contributors.

“Humans are the main drivers of change in terms of the biophysical aspects of this planet,” shared Calderon.

In the Philippines, the household sector consumes the largest amount of energy (35,324 GWh) according to the Department of Energy’s 2022 Annual Power Statistics, followed by the industrial sector (28,844 GWh) and the commercial sector (24,294 GWh).

“It may be a concerning statistic, but this also presents as an opportunity to make a change through a collective effort of individuals,” Calderon said.

WWF-Philippines and Epson are urging companies to initiate measures towards fostering an energy-efficient environment both at home and in the workplace–beginning on an individual level.

Putting this plan into motion, Epson arranged for WWF-Philippines to conduct an educational session for its employees. The session was designed to enlighten attendees about energy consumption, its environmental implications and to inspire them to initiate change. According to Calderon, these actions could be as straightforward as opting for public transportation instead of private vehicles or maximizing the use of natural light during the day.

“Epson values the power of individual actions and their collective impact,” stated Masako Kusama, President and Director of Epson Philippines. “By teaching our employees how to manage their energy use effectively, we’re building a culture of sustainability and doing our part in the global fight against pollution.”

Led by Calderon, the session highlighted the responsibility of companies like Epson to inform their employees about energy consumption and management, and translate this knowledge into practice.

“Companies hold a key position in tackling environmental challenges. By promoting awareness and fostering sustainable habits among employees, corporations like Epson can contribute to decreasing consumption and protecting our planet for the generations to come,” explained Calderon. “What is crucial now is taking that first step through encouraging individual actions.”

Epson is optimistic that its collaboration with WWF-Philippines will enhance understanding of the environmental crisis and instill a sense of accountability among its employees. Through these discussions and continued collaboration with WWF-Philippines to create and implement programs, Epson strives to empower its employees to embrace sustainable habits and play their part in the worldwide mission to protect the environment.
