AEW releases CM Punk after recent backstage altercation

All Elite Wrestling or AEW releases CM Punk after his most recent backstage altercation involving talent Jack Perry aka Jungle Boy

Here’s what they wrote on their Facebook page:

STATEMENT FROM ALL ELITE WRESTLING AND TONY KHAN
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has terminated the wrestler and employment agreements between Phillip Brooks (CM Punk) and AEW with cause, effective immediately. The termination was confirmed today by Tony Khan, CEO, General Manager and Head of Creative of AEW.

The termination follows a weeklong internal investigation of an incident occurring back stage at AEW – All In London on Sunday, August 27. Following the investigation, the AEW Discipline Committee met and later convened with outside legal counsel before making a unanimous recommendation to Khan that CM Punk be terminated with cause.

Khan offered the following statement:

“Phil played an important role within AEW and I thank him for his contributions. The termination of his AEW contracts with cause is ultimately my decision, and mine alone. Of course, I wish I didn’t have to share this news, which may come as a disappointment to many of our fans. Nevertheless, I am making the decision in the best interests of the many amazing people who make AEW possible every week – our talent, staff, venue operators and many others whose efforts are unsung but essential to bringing our fans great shows on television and at arenas and stadiums throughout the world.”

If you remember, for All In London, Punk was facing Samoa Joe for the title…

It was reported that Punk had a fight with Luke Perry’s son Jack Perry fka Jungle Boy.

“The story was that when Jack Perry wanted to do this spot, CM Punk said, ‘We’re not using glass. We don’t use glass around here,’” Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez said. “And the story was something like, ‘CM Punk was afraid that Jack Perry was trying to do a spot where he would be cut up, so he wouldn’t have to go to work.’ So I heard that and was like, ‘Wait a second.’

Punk and Perry exchanged words once the latter returned backstage. What happened next is up in the air, but witnesses have agreed that things got physical. A “neutral source” said Punk shoved, punched, and choked Perry in front of AEW owner Tony Khan.

“Once things were broken up, Punk allegedly ‘lunged’ at Khan before telling the AEW boss he would be quitting the company,” the Wrestling Observer reported.

Interestingly enough, Punk’s firing from AEW came almost a year since his backstage fight with Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks resulting in the suspension of these AEW stars.
