Riot Games announces Improved Connectivity PH League of Legends Servers

Following the launch of Riot servers for League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics across Southeast Asia earlier this January, our teams have been continuously optimizing our tech and publishing operations to bring you the best gaming experience.

We’ve heard your feedback about less than desirable ping speeds on these new servers and have since doubled down on our investments in the region, to get our infrastructure up to speed with what will feel and perform best as you chase those kill streaks on the Rift.

What is ping anyway?

Ping, or latency as the more accurate technical term, refers to the time it takes for a packet of information (a click, or pressing Q) to travel from your computer to the game server and back.. Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms).

In online games like League of Legends, ping pretty much determines how quickly your computer is communicating with the game servers. Also, how quickly you will see an action happen once you press a key, or click your mouse or smite the dragon at the right moment. The lower your ping, the faster the communication is happening and that’s better for you. Curious to know what’s your ping while playing LoL? Simply hit “Ctrl + F” to toggle the ping display on the top right corner of your screen.

What is a good ping speed for gaming?

For League of Legends, we believe that below 60ms it is a good playing experience. Other games will have a different standard. However, we want to be ambitious and we aim to achieve the best experience possible so you can experience a faster and more seamless connection while you play. Maybe that high ping is what’s keeping you from becoming Challenger.

What is changing?

After we launched the new Riot servers for LoL and TFT in the region, latency for the Philippines clocked in at an average of 45-50ms. We know that this hasn’t been ideal, and we can’t thank you enough for sharing all your feedback and for being patient while we made all the necessary tweaks and changes to improve your experience.

We’re working hand in hand with local companies to install game servers in Manila for League and TFT, which will allow for average ping speeds of 15-25ms for players here in the Philippines. While notable improvements can be expected across the country, some players in central Manila may even experience pings under 15ms.

When is this happening and what do I need to do?

Our teams are working hard to deploy the PH local servers and running all the required tests and checks. Players can start to experience improvements from the middle of August onwards. We don’t anticipate any server downtime and there won’t be any special steps that players have to take, but do keep sharing your feedback as we go along!

We may also have some plans to put the new local servers to the test, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates on our social channels:
