What’s the Main Conflict for Marauders? (Marauders # 1 Spoilers)
We got some major Marauders # 1 spoilers today with the release of the new ongoing book under the Dawn of X banner from Marvel; and our main question is what’s the main conflict or the central narrative for the book?
The book is written by Gerry Duggan with art by Matteo Lolli and Federico Blee.
If the main thrust of the main X-Men book is about the ongoing war between the mutants and mankind’s Orchis group, the main drive of Marauders is logistics and extraction. And it does so in a quirky way via a problem. Kitty Pryde, now calling herself Kate Pryde, cannot use the Krakoa gateway to reach the mutant island.
Her first try, she breaks her nose as she cannot pass through those flower gateways. So while the X-Men can easily move from one place to another, Kitty has to take a boat just to reach the island.
From there the story branches out…
Bishop is in Taiwan investigating a mutant who reportedly stepped through the Krakoa portal and never reached the island; Emma Frost is taking the Black Market by storm and wants Kitty to play captain to a Hellfire Club owned ship that they can use to bring stranded mutants around the world back to Krakoa as well as deliver the Krakoan medicine to the countries that have accepted the mutant aid. Then there’s Kate Pryde’s indecision on how to take the fact that she cannot really get to “heaven” for some unknown reason.
The team also sets sail to Russia where a portal has been cordoned off by the Russian government with the mutants who intend to use the gateway taken away. To make matters worse, they have tech that dampens mutant powers. This is where Kitty shows how tough she really is. She fights off the soldiers including the armored grunt with the dampener.
Rescuing the abducted mutants inspires Kitty to coin the term Marauders for her team of mutants; its also the term she uses to her video that they intend to use as a promotion.
The issue ends with their team getting a new mandate and mission and Kate Pryde getting a new lease on life after being effectively kicked out of Krakoa.
