The Complete History of the Black Order
So we are all talking about the Black Order now aka Thanos’ Children as they appear in Marvel Studios’ Avengers Infinity War but rather than going full spoilers on the MCU version, let’s talk about their comic book appearance, particularly during Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity event.
First off the comics version of the Black Order aka Cull Obsidian first debuted in Infinity # 1 and was composed of the members who made it to Infinity War the movie, namely Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, Supergiant and Black Dwarf.
So let’s look at these guys and their accomplishments back when they were super badassess aka Infinity.
The first time we see a member of the Order, it was Infinity # 1 where Thanos sends out Corvus Glaive to collect his tribute…
He sends an Outrider to Earth to look for something and after almost getting killed by the Inhuman king Black Bolt, the Outrider returns and informs Glaive of what it found out.
The Order is then introduced but at this point we don’t know their powers.
Later in the story, with the Avengers away in a mission in space and only the Illuminati are there to protect the world, Thanos strikes out and sends his children to the homes of the members of the Illuminati.
Black Dwarf gets Wakanda, the home of the Black Panther…
The hulking monster is defeated by Black Panther and they retreat. Proves the point that Wakanda cannot be conquered so easily.
Proxima Midnight is sent to Atlantis, the home of Namor the Submariner and also a member of the Illuminati.
Proxima levels Namor’s army and he gives up.
The psychic Supergiant and Corvus Glaive storm the X-Men’s School with Beast as their target. Wolverine puts up a vicious fight against Corvus.
Ebony Maw attacks Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum and manages to bind Wong as well.
Despite his power, Stephen Strange succumbs to Maw’s power. It’s because of this that Thanos succeeds in finding his Inhuman son Thane.
Later in the Infinity story, the Black Order join their master in confronting Black Bolt on the whereabouts of Thanos’ son. They were absent from the fight.
Ebony Maw on the other hand is successful in finding the secret Inhuman village where Thane helps in healing people. Unfortunately for him, Black Bolt had detonated the Terrigen bomb which unleashes his true power.
Maw convinces Thane that he needs to accept his powers rather than ignore it.
The rest of the Black Order was then sent to Wakanda with the hopes of finding something that they can use. Proxima Midnight leads the charge and encounters Shuri.
Thanos invades the City of the Dead which was nearby Wakanda. There they discover the weapons that the Illuminati had built to fight incursions that threaten the 616 universe.
Back with Ebony Maw, Thane is given a new power suit that can control his power. Unbeknownst to him, Maw is setting him up for a trap.
