Why Worry that ABS-CBN is Involved in MNL 48

So yesterday, they announced that the search for the AKB48 spinoff group MNL48 would be done with the help of ABS-CBN. That’s actually a red flag in some way. Here’s why.

I have no doubt that the ABS juggernaut can hype the search and bring this new idol group to the far flung reaches of our dear PH. Experts na sila to be honest.

Its the HOW that worries me.

You see ABS-CBN is a fan of underdogs and rags to riches stories. Believe me, may track record na sila. Name me one reality competition winner that’s not impoverished. Sure there may be a few here and there but its become very predictable who wins in “talent” shows at Channel 2.

That’s completely OK to be honest. They actually do people a solid with that. But while browsing for reactions last night while doing the groceries, I found this nugget.

This one’s overdoing it. But I hope you get the picture. MNL48 kinda needs more than the mundane and usual treatment.

Putting the search for the Philippines’ premiere idol group, the one with blessings from the Japanese counterpart, in the hands of ABS-CBN could spell lackluster talents and one-off popularity. I may not be a hardcore follower, but I’m familiar with the level of seriousness the idol business is in Japan. People fricking fight over idol girls. They even hold elections and popularity contests for AKB48.

I guess its too late now to do anything about the partnership between Hallo Hallo Entertainment and ABS-CBN. We all have to wait and see what happens when they start hyping up this show. I also hope they don’t fuck up the format and turning it into another Boy Band PH reality search.
