Marvel Got a Character in Exchange for Getting Something Changed in Deadpool
Deadpool screenwriter Paul Wernick has confirmed that there have been a trade between Marvel Studios and Fox during the development of Deadpool particularly for a character who makes a grand appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!
In an interview with Newsarama, its been revealed that Fox wanted to change Negasonic Teenage Warhead‘s powers but to do so would get some serious legal actions from Marvel’s end (because Fox had the film rights but Marvel owns the character).
In her first comic book appearance in Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, we see Negasonic in Emma Frost’s class moments before a Sentinel attacks Genosha. She was psychic in the book.
In 2016’s Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds, Negasonic (played by Brianna Hildebrand) was a huge hit among moviegoers and popcorn-munchers. She also got a change of powers ditching her psychic ability and becoming a younger, female version of the X-Force/ X-Men/ Avenger Cannonball.
She was perfect for the role and the character’s power fit perfectly. But 20th Century Fox had to do some backdoor dealings for them to pull that success off.
Again, history time.
So the Wernick story goes ahead and states that Fox had to give up the rights to the character known as Ego the Living Planet, who has now been revealed as the father to Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
For your reference here’s what Ego the Living Planet looks like in the comic books…
Here’s what Ego the Living Planet looks like when he became Nu-Xandar in the pages of Nova (the Richard Rider volume)…
… and here’s Kurt Russel.
I’m very curious how James Gunn will get away with convincing Marvel fans that this is indeed Ego and not another cosmic Marvel character like Adam Warlock.
adam strange… is DC…
