APCC 2016 – Nicholas Hoult “The X-Men Can Take the Avengers”
Nicholas Hoult was the star of the show for the third day of festivities for the Asiapop Comicon 2016 held at the SMX Convention center in Pasay and his main stage appearance made the whole event even more exciting for both regular congoers as well as the geeks.
The event was hosted by Chico Garcia of “The Morning Rush” on RX 93.1. The SMX Convention Center’s F4, which was the Main Stage area, was packed with both fans and curious congoers alike. But it was really the kids and teenagers who were eagerly awaiting the start of the show.
It was then that I realized, Hoult has gone a long way.
Beginnings of a Beast
The British actor first made it big with the film “About a Boy” where he starred opposite Hugh Grant…
He also appeared in the TV series “Skins” together with fellow APCC 2016 guest Joe Dempsie. Hoult became a big name when he was cast as Hank McCoy aka The Beast for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men First Class and reprised his role in the new trilogy of X-Men films from 20th Century Fox which includes X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. Other movies he appeared in (of note) include Jack the Giant Slayer, Mad Max: Fury Road and Warm Bodies.
The APCC Experience
Its apparent that he was happy to be here and at the same time meet new and old friends. More importantly he has stressed that he’s happy to meet the adoring Filipino fans who went gaga over him as soon as it was announced a few weeks ago.
Chico also kept the X-Men star on his toes with the questions he asked and the rapport. Amidst all of that – cheering, screaming and applause from the audience.
Much to the delight of his fans in attendance, Hoult also pulls out his cheat sheet and utters “Mahal ko Kayo”
Hoult says that he’s been to Intramuros together with Joe Dempsie and felt that he was lucky enough to see the Spanish-era walled city just before the stormy weather showered its wrath all around the metro. He’s also proud of his accomplishments when it comes to eating including having tasted “isaw” or barbecued pork intestines.
When he was asked if he’s willing to try “Balut” he cringed, especially after a detailed description of the Filipino delicacy.
After that Hoult took in questions from fans including one from this website’s friends, the Philippine X-Men team.
There were tons of fun questions asked including who he would like to play in the X-Men movies with which he wants to play Magneto.
Questions were also asked about the sequel to Warm Bodies, if he’s ready to play the role of a human R; a cute little kid also asked Hoult what his favorite ice cream flavor is, to which he answers Neopolitan.
More importantly, he was asked who would win in a fight, the X-Men and the Avengers.
He answers that the X-Men would win because of the sheer number,
“We have the Phoenix.” he adds “we have mutants who can control and read minds”.
One of the last questions that was asked by a lady in a Jubilee costume was what the strangest thing he’s experienced while shooting the X-Men movies.
“Playing wargames with the cast.”
He recounts how at one time James McAvoy ambushed him in his bedroom just to unload pellets on his head.
The conversation ends with Hoult briefly tackling his next film project “Rebel in the Rye” which is a J.D. Salinger biopic from before the author wrote the classic novel “Catcher in the Rye”.
The Nicholas Hoult main stage appearance for Asiapop Comicon 2016 ends with a selfie session with the audience…
