Feels Friday: When Barry Allen’s The Flash Remembers Wally West
For Feels Friday, lets do DC UNIVERSE REBIRTH. I dunno about you guys and gals but I can certainly say that I shed a tear or two after reading the issue, particularly that part where Barry Allen and his nephew Wally West get reunited after so many years.
So if you’re not caught up with your DC lore, Barry Allen’s selfish move in Flashpoint triggered the formation of the New 52, that’s all these stories from the last five years. Only DC made a lot of mistake in real life and they are now reverting back to the old school DC we knew and loved. As for redhead Wally West here, he was part of the characters that was disused and later racebent. Although that’s not OUR Wally at all as revealed in DC Universe: Rebirth # 1. OUR Wally was stuck in the speedforce for the past few years.
We’ll delve into that soon. For the meantime, lets get right back to our feels.
The overall theme of this one-shot was to tell the story of how Rebirth will unfurl and West is our POV character as he ventures all around the DC New 52 universe in search of somebody he has a connection with AND spring him out of his speedforce prison.
He’s tried several characters including Batman but he ends up visiting his uncle Barry Allen who was at the time saving people.
By this time, Wally’s so weak that rather than asking for help from the Silver Age Flash, he just kinda bids farewell.
DC Comics has forgotten the fact that there’s a clue about Flashpoint in the letter that Barry gave Bruce at the end of Flashpoint # 5, a letter written by Thomas Wayne, that reality’s version of Batman.
It’s also heartbreaking to here Wally say “You forgot things… like me.” Really, its like he’s not just talking to Barry, he’s talking to us. After all, for people my age (1985 and above) our Flash was Wally West.
“Every second was a gift”
Just as Wally in his Kid Flash form slowly disassembles into the night, Barry “remembers”
I swear, at this point, on my first read of the book (the real copy not the digital), I really did shed tears. Wally was like a son to Barry. He is what he is because Barry was there to teach him. Much like how Joe West helped shape TV’s Barry Allen to become what he is.
Just like that Wally was free and we have two Kid Flashes running around the DCU…
That line really did make me cry.
Pack your stuff kids, we’re going on a feels trip.
Also, seriously, get a copy of DC Universe: Rebirth. If you’re in Manila, I recommend Comic Oddyssey in Robinsons Galleria & Fully Booked BGC.
