Big news today as Ubisoft has officially announced the opening of their new office in the Philippines, particularly in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
According to my sources who attended the event at Bonifacio Global City (who we shall hide under the guise of Will Work for Games), the company that gave us Assassin’s Creed and The Division will be opening an office with an estimated 50 employees working there.
They plan to hit 500 employees within a 5 year period also. Even better news is that the office will be located at another LaSallian school, De La Salle University Santa Rosa. Reportedly, the Manila office will work closely with Ubisoft Singapore, the same branch who brightened ESGS last year with a big ass display at the SMX Convention Center.
Olivier de Rotalier, managing director of Ubisoft Philippines, says:
It’s a country with young people who are very, very connected. They’re social media experienced, and that’s very important for us. They’re very connected and tech savvy. For the game we’re building, to be able to incorporate that innovation is very important
So aside from developing their own games here in Luzon, Ubisoft will also be working with other game developers for other AAA games. In a nutshell, they will be taking in outsourced work. For all we know, this could be the future home of the sequel to Mass Effect Andromeda or another Final Fantasy game.
I will sleep soundly though knowing that someday soon, a better and not-really-maligned Assassin’s Creed game will have some of its roots here in the Philippines.
ALSO, I would like to point out that while this is definitely news, there has been buzz about Ubisoft opening an office here in the Philippines as early as April 2015. It was all hush-hush at that point so I’m slightly surprised but not fully surprised. Remember that time when they came up with different Assassin’s Creed Philippines CGs and renders and stories, I hear that was part of a pitch for a game to be set in the Spanish-era Manila.
