It looks like Marvel Comics will finally be undoing that mess that they did with the early 2000s story One More Day in the pages of the new volume of Avengers. Here’s the Avengers # 1 spoilers written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Marco Checchetto.

Let’s summarize what happened in this issue. The Avengers have disbanded and the public sentiment towards the superpowered community has soured especially after the events of Avengers Armageddon which saw the deaths of thousands of people in Russia after the Red Hulk exploded in a busy Russian city.
Back in the states after some time, several of the heroes are feeling the pain of the death and destruction on various levels. Daredevil comes to Captain Marvel / Carol Danvers aid as she is personally suffering from the incident operating on just 10% capacity after absorbing the nuclear explosion in Russia.
Wolverine returns to New York from the X-Men’s New Orleans base because he feels like he can help the new Miracle Man and former Captain America, David Colton, as he deals with his own failure to stop Red Hulk.
Luke Cage is caught in the conflict as he gears up for re-election going against a mayoral candidate who plays on the fear of the superhumans. On top of this, he is also looking into the mysterious death of a benefactor (which was killed by Mephisto earlier in the issue).
Spider-Man takes the brunt of the drama, going through his daily patrol with a low-level spider-sense tingling throughout the day. In the end of Avengers: Armageddon, he also understands why people still trust superheroes amidst the turmoil and distrust.

In the issue’s second half, we see that New York is under attack by what we can only describe as angels, attacking people and claiming what was promised to their boss. This happens around the same time the new “Avengers” team comes together to stop a fight between Spider-Man and David Colton. With the attack, these heroes band together to stop these angels from harming more people.

Luke Cage also discovers that striking the angels down teleports them somewhere else and not killing them. So the Avengers arm up and use their weapons against them.

One of the would-be victims gets rescued by Daredevil and turns out that she’s been looking for Spider-Man.

During their conversation, she reveals that the book she’s clutching, told her that Spider-Man is the key to stopping the madness and that the friendly neighborhood wallcrawler once made a deal with the devil to save a life. Spider-Man seems to not remember this but the book certainly knows what went down between Peter Parker, his former wife Mary Jane Watson and Mephisto in the pages of the controversial “One More Day” storyline. And now it looks like every deal Mephisto made is unraveling which may include the deal that saved the life of May Parker in exchange of Peter and MJ’s would-be daughter.

The final page for Avengers # 1 reveals that the angels are at the F.E.A.S.T. building looking to attack May Parker.
