Rogue One Writer has his non-canon explanation for the missing number in Rogue Squadron

Time to go a little Star Wars deep dive for hardcore Star Wars fans out there. Today we talk about the cinematic gem known as Rogue One: A Star Wars story and how it ties to the X-Wing squad in the original trilogy called Rogue Squadron; or better yet, why there’s no mention of them as call signs.

So if you remember your Star Wars, the Rogue Squadron had “Rogue Leader” then directly went to “Rogue Two” skipping past “Rogue One” when dropping their callsigns before a mission…

This was clearly the case if you were paying attention during the start of the Battle of Yavin, where the Rebel Alliance took down the Death Star. It was also here were the greats were introduced namely Luke Skywalker, Biggs Darklighter and the legendary pilot Wedge Antilles. In the “Legends” lore which was previously called the Star Wars Expanded Universe, the Rogue Squadron were mythic squadron of pilots who responded to various threats in the New Republic.

But again, there’s no sign of Rogue One in their ranks.

This is where Rogue One writer Gary Whitta comes in to give his non-canon answer to why this was the case. Here’s what he posted on Twitter…

I still like my idea (not canonized) that there is no Rogue One callsign in EMPIRE (or the OT in general) because the Rebellion retired it after the Battle of Scarif out of respect for those who died on that mission. It goes straight from Rogue Leader to Rogue Two. https://t.co/dh93uZOxMv

That would actually make a lot of sense too, for the men and women who sacrificed their lives to obtain the data which was later used to destroy the Empire’s Death Star. As many Twitter users pointed out, this would be much like how teams retire a specific number and players can’t use that jersey number anymore. That’s like how Whitta thought of the lack of Rogue One for callsigns in the Star Wars universe.
