Here’s Why “Captain Marvel” Directors Changed Goose’s Name in the Movie
If you’ve been reading Captain Marvel for awhile now, I’m sure you’re familiar with Carol Danvers’ pet cat Chewie. And with next week being the opening of the MCU version, the film’s directors Anna Bodden and Ryan Fleck recently spoke out about the minor change.
In an interview with Collider, Captain Marvel directors directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck answered the question why they changed the name from Chewie to Goose.
The duo starts that there was just such a big saturation in Star Wars references in past movies and in pop-culture in general. Fleck adds that “It wasn’t a big thing. It just felt like Star Wars was so part of the culture that, it just felt like we wanted to remove it a little bit,” he also adds “Star Wars felt like it was something from the ’70s and ’80s, and I think that was the spirit of Chewie from the comics, but we felt like we wanted to sort of just slide away from that slightly.”
Boden also adds that a Top Gun reference more apt considering Carol Danvers’ air force background.
