OPPO Reno12 5G Review – AI is the Name of the Game

Here’s my OPPO Reno12 5G Review which features AI LinkBoost, 120Hz refresh rate, 50MP Main Camera with OIS, 32MP Selfie Camera and more!

Display

This phone features a 6.7 AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 1080 x 2412 resolution. It’s pretty durable too because of the Corning Gorilla Glass 7i so you don’t have to worry about getting it dinged too much even when you’re outside. Refresh rate also complements your usage whether it’s social media posting, streaming a movie or playing mobile games. All of that is covered. But I totally love the image output and colors on this phone.

Design

The Reno12 5G comes in three colors namely Astro Silver, Sunset Pink and Matte Brown. The review unit I got was Astro Silver and I thoroughly enjoyed the look on this.

Word of advice when buying a case for this phone, get a clear one because you really to flaunt off the excellent design and finish for this.

The keys are all the same too with the right part holding the volume rocker and the power button. The bottom of the phone contains one of two forward firing speakers, the USB charging port and the SIM Tray.

Camera

The OPPO Reno12 comes with quite a punch even when it’s not the Pro version. The triple camera system at the back features

• 50 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 1/1.95″, 0.8µm, multi-directional PDAF, OIS
• 8 MP, f/2.2, 16mm, 112˚ (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm
• 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro)

I also wanted to point that at this point in time, OPPO has already become a true expert when it comes to mobile night photography with their phones. The sensors are able to discern the right temperature for the colors at night, definitely leaps and bounds from what they had with their phones some 5 to 6 years ago.

Video

The OPPO Reno12 utilizes the Triple Camera system including the 50MP main camera to give us various video outputs. The phone can shoot in 720p, 1080p and 4K. You can also choose between 30fps and 60fps. I do suggest that you set the videos to 1080p if you want to do 60fps videos because you get to shoot more videos this way. Here are some sample videos I took with 1080p / 60FPS.

Of course when you zoom in the video too much, it drags down the quality but you still get those 60fps goodness.

OPPO Reno12 Review – Features

The other two features that make the OPPO Reno12 series such a fun phone is the AI system they’ve added in. I actually had a lot of fun during the making of this review because of the fun AI templates that’s made available for OPPO users.

The only drawback for me is that it requires 10 gems or coins to use in built-in app. It may or may not be a peeve for you so I’m just going to let you know.

The AI Eraser is also the most competent “AI Eraser” I’ve used for this batch of smartphones sticking to this whole “AI” bandwagon. The OPPO Reno12 lets you pick three ways of erasing unnecessary elements in an image especially taken using the smartphone. These three choices are as follows:

So below you’ll see a sample of what the AI Eraser can do. In the photo below I used the “remove people” option and the AI recognized who the subject is and the people that were needed to be removed. It does take a short time and a stable Internet connection to be able to pull this off.

Where is the AI Eraser on the OPPO Reno12?

Just go to the photo you want to edit and hit “Edit” and look for the “AI Eraser” in the selection. Just after filters.

Speaking of filters, there are a number of great filters loaded into the camera including Original, Vivid, Film 2, Warm, Cool, Gray, Mono, B&W (Black and white), Natural, Food, Film 1, Faded and Cyberpunk. The Food filter in particular makes your food photos stand out.

 

 

UI and UX

This phone runs on the Android 14 working together with OPPO’s COLOROS which was COLOROS 14.1. The Dimensity 7300- Energy processor also helps in making everything fast and smooth especially for gaming and social media browsing. Even “heavier” things like editing photos and videos for posting is done through a breeze; a sign that OPPO keeps abreast with the fast-paced tech race. Plus the performance on this one 9797 work performance score, you can’t go wrong on the quality.

I’m not a fan of the current build where you have to swipe on the top left for the controls and swipe down the top right for notifications although that can be easily fixed with a few adjustments.

Battery Life

The OPPO Reno12 comes with a 5000mAh battery which can go from 1 to 50% charge in under 20 minutes and hit 100% from 1% in under 50 minutes. It’s all thanks to the SuperVOOC charging at 80W. Based on personal use you can get through an entire day at more than 50%. However, if you are using mobile data throughout the day you might need to scramble for the nearest outlet before the end of the day or around evening time. So if you get this and will be commuting home, I suggest you charge up before clocking out so you don’t have any worries about getting low on juice.

OPPO Reno12 5G Review – Final Thoughts

The OPPO Reno12 5G is the ideal smartphone for fun and business but won’t break the bank. It’s got a good display, aesthetically pleasing body especially the silver variant and the AI features mean business and ain’t no fluff. The camera just like the battery is dependable; giving you great images with a wide range of filters to choose from. The AI functions are actually very handy especially if you’re more into mobile photography or care very deeply about your social media posts. AI Eraser is on the top of my list although you’ll also have fun with AI Studio. This packs a punch for its price range.

The OPPO Reno12 5G is now available in stores as well as online platforms like Shopee and Lazada for just P24,999.
