Yahya Abdul Mateen II reportedly cast as Wonder Man
Deadline reports that “Watchmen” and Ambulance star Yahya Abdul Mateen II is moving over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he was reportedly cast as Simon Williams aka Wonder Man.
No full details have been reported by Deadline but its an interesting take on the character. The Wonder Man series was announced back in June with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest who was the co-producer for Hawkeye.
We will also be seeing Ben Kingsley‘s Trevor Slattery in it and I think its fitting especially since the dude was an actor and that might just tie in to the character.
Abdul-Mateen II isn’t a stranger to the comic book movie genre. We already know him as Black Manta from James Wan’s first Aquaman movie and is set to reprise his role for the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He also played Cal Abar / Dr. Manhattan in the HBO series Watchmen where he also nabbed his first Emmy back in 2020.
Wonder Man was created by Stan Lee and artist Don Heck and Jack Kirby. Williams first appeared in The Avengers # 9 from 1964. He is the son of industrialist Sanford Williams who happens to be a rival at the time of Tony Stark. He is also the brother of the villain known as the Grim Reaper. This actor and Avenger gained his powers when he worked with Baron Zemo and attacked the Avengers.
Hope we get a lot of development here especially since Marvel took a short cut and a lot of liberties with the origins of a number of characters that fall under Wonder Man’s circle like Ultron, The Vision, Hank Pym and more. It is still exciting to think what genre Marvel would be doing with this character and the Disney+ show as well.
