Top Gun: Maverick review

Friend to site and frequent contributor Vinni Misa takes over this Top Gun: Maverick review which opens today and stars Tom Cruise!

Released in a troubled era for cinema that’s undergoing pandemic recovery, franchise fatigue, and countless 1980’s revivals, Top Gun: Maverick makes the cinematic experience worthwhile through its bold decisions and immersive filmmaking.

Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski, starring Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, Jon Hamm and Val Kilmer to name a few. The story picks up some 30 years after the original. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is now a test pilot for the US Navy, whose unchanging cavallier antics lead him to continue getting in trouble with higher ups in the Navy. Despite his impressive record, he has continued to dodge promotion, wanting to remain a Captain so that he can continue flying. Maverick’s antics lead him to be called back to Top Gun to train a group of graduates on a risky mission to bomb a uranium plant in an unnamed enemy country. Among these graduates is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Maverick’s late best friend and RIO, Goose.

Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

The film surpassed the original in many ways. In an era of CGI abundance, “Maverick” impresses greatly with its practical action spectacles. Its editing and cinematography puts you right into the action, providing an immersive fighter pilot experience in the cinema. But perhaps it’s biggest strength over the original classic is its emotional impact. The screenplay, the cast’s performance, and the right amount of nostalgia provide just as much feels as the thrills. Tom Cruise is at his A-Game, both as an actor and producer, making sure the 36 year wait for one of his signature character’s return was worth it. Just like Mad Max: Fury Road back in 2015, this film surpasses its predecessor while displaying an impressive amount of practical action filmmaking. This is a must-watch for moviegoers that you would not want to miss in cinemas. Furthermore, go see it in IMAX if you can.

I’m scoring Top Gun: Maverick a perfect 10!

Verdict: 10/10

Top Gun: Maverick is out in Philippine cinemas on May 25, released by Paramount Pictures and United International Pictures.
