New Makoto Shinkai project revealed as Suzume no Tojimari
The reveal was done in a press conference in Japan’s Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and is set for release in Fall 2022 in Japan initially. Check out the key visual for the new movie below:
The filmmaker describes the movie as a “modern adventure story, an action film and a road trip movie” and will follow the titular character Suzume, a 17-year-old girl from a quiet Kyūshū town who meets a young man looking for a door. They find a door within ruins in the mountain, and Suzume opens it. Soon, more doors begin to open around Japan, bringing disasters from the other side. The film depicts Suzume’s liberation and growth, as she closes the doors that are causing disaster.
Shinkai stated that three important points about the film are that it is a road movie around Japan, a story about “closing doors” rather than opening them, and a reason to visit the movie theater. He elaborated that closing doors can refer to tying loose ends or finishing something.
Shinkai will be directing and writing the screenplay for Suzume no Tojimari and will also be getting credits for writing the original story. Character design will be done by Masayoshi Tanaka while Kenichi Tsuchiya will be animation director; both of them had previously worked with Shinkai on your name. The film will be produced by CoMix Wave Fims and Story Inc and will be distributed by TOHO.
Weathering with You opened in July 2019 and has since become the 8th highest earning film in Japan as well as the highest grossing film in 2019 in Japan.
