Overwatch officially renames McCree to Cole Cassidy
To further distance the game from the developer, Overwatch just renamed the character known as McCree to Cole Cassidy.
Blizzard Entertainment had a nice story for this too…
The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his long ago,” the Twitter reveal reads. “Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and what he had become. But in every cowboy’s life, there comes a time where he has to stop and make a stand. To make this new Overwatch better, to make things right, he had to be honest with his team and himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and Cole Cassidy faced the world at dawn.

So the short of this is that there was a bunch of fratboys running Activision a while back which led to a lot of booze, controversy, sexual mishabevior and a hotel room they frequented called the Cosby Suite. Now their misbehavings have gone public and women have spoken up against them including Jesse McCree, the guy the cowboy McCree was named after. So it was only natural that Activision and Blizzard would want to quietly distance themselves the character from this controversy. You can read the whole Cosby Store HERE.
Meanwhile the renaming to “Cole Cassidy” will officially happen October 26 in the game so expect minor updates when you play the game. Also I read that they were going to do a new campaign to be launched in September which will also figure in “Cole Cassidy” but due I guess that got pushed back indefinitely due to the name change. Hey, maybe they can integrate the name change in the upcoming story.
