What If…? Episode 1 review
Here’s my What If…? Episode 1 review which is now streaming on Disney+ which focuses on Peggy Carter as she becomes Captain Carter in this reality replacing Steve Rogers.
What If…? definitely made sure that they were able to deliver a satisfying episode which runs for 30 minutes, takes important cues from past Marvel Studios film, give its own twist and continue to build on the concept of the Multiverse mentioned in WandaVision and fully formed in Loki.
Astounding voice work too from a lot of returning Marvel Studios, in this case, Captain America: The First Avenger alums. This includes Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola and more. I always knew British accents were sexy and Captain Carter is one of the many characters that prove that point.
Visibly absent though for this episode are heavy hitters like Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving who expressed their hesitation working with Marvel in the past. So their characters had very limited lines or were reduced to just a cameo.
One really major bummer here is the absence of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. It just feels empty without the real Cap doing voice work. They did promise that What If…? would be have a lot of the original cast in it but I guess they may not have locked in Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans to reprise their roles.
Still on the subject of Steve, its fun to see him in a different light. Still heroic but having a different method of saving lives and fighting the Nazis, the Axis and the HYDRA. This might just be the show’s underlying message, that even though things are different, a hero will be a hero and will always rise to the occassion.
Even if the show is in animated format, watching it really showed that its bordering between live action and animated. I’m not familiar with this style of animation but I definitely love it.
Another thing thats lacking for me was the reflective and intelligent-sounding musings of Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright). The source material i.e. the comics often ends with some words of wisdom by The Watcher but we dont have that… yet
So far, What If…? is off to a good start with their first episode in the bag. Can’t wait for the next episode.
