Black Widow Post-Credit Scene explained (Black Widow Spoilers)
Now that it looks like everybody’s pretty much seen Black Widow in Disney+ or in cinemas (lucky bastards) its time to do Black Widow spoilers starting with an explainer on the Black Widow post-credit scene.
And like this post has been titled, there will be massive Black Widow spoilers here so SPOILER ALERT.
In the Black Widow post-credit scene we find Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) visiting the grave of her sister, Natasha Romanov sometime after the Avengers brought back everybody after “The Snap” as seen in Avengers: Endgame. She’s with a dog named Fanny, which is a call back to a scene in the film where Natasha was jokingly referred to as “Fanny Longbottom”.
Nat’s grave is gets visitors often with people leaving their tributes to the fallen Avenger and she even gets this nice inscription on her grave which reads “Daughter. Sister. Avenger”. As Yelena goes through Natasha’s grave a familiar face pops up.
It’s Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (who we first met in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier recruiting John F. Walker and giving him a new gear as US Agent.)
Yelena tells Val that she’s off duty and took this time to visit her sister’s grave. Val then tells Yelena that she has another target that needs to be neutralized. She realizes that Yelena is hesitant to work with her so she gives her an additional incentive, the identity of the man who caused the death of Natasha…
And its Clint Barton aka Hawkeye aka Ronin. This sets up Pugh’s appearance in the upcoming Disney+ series “Hawkeye” which stars Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop.
What does this mean?
So what does this mean for the MCU? I’ll take a step in assuming that the post-credits for Black Widow will be the first steps towards crowning a new Black Widow in the wake of Romanov’s death. Florence Pugh’s Yelena will be going through the trope-y narrative of being fed wrong information and attacking the wrong guy then getting a massive pep talk, some big fight and a realization that this isn’t what her sister wanted for her.
The Hawkeye TV series would be where the fight would happen and then the still unannounced and unconfirmed Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers movie is where we will be getting Yelena’s wake up call. Maybe. Or she could return to the side of the good guys by the end of Hawkeye. Who’s to say.
Having a new Black Widow in the form of younger Pugh means that they can do away with certain wrong stuff they did with Nat (like that awful romance Joss Whedon forced her and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner to go through in Avengers: Age of Ultron) and start fresh. But again, that all depends on how dark and deep she went with Val in between the time of the ending of Black Widow and the post-credit scene which could be months or weeks after Avengers: Endgame.
