Spider-Man Leaving the MCU after Disney-Sony Partnership Dissolves
It looks like whatever plans Marvel and Sony has planned for Spider-Man may be put on hold as the two are reportedly cutting ties over the use of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU. Yeah, in a nutshell Spider-Man leaving the MCU is happening right now!
So how is this happening? Why is Spider-Man leaving the MCU?
Well it all boils down to money; profit sharing to be exact. Deadline reports that the partnership is currently on-hold until negotiations are complete. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also stepped away from anything related to Spider-Man according to several reports online.
So here’s how this works up until “Far from Home”. Sony pays Disney/ Marvel X amount of money for them to create the Spider-Man movies most people love today. Whatever the movie earns, Marvel/Disney will get 5 percent while Sony Pictures brings home everything. The current deal that Disney is pushing for is a 50/50 split from the movies moving forward. That did not sound right to Sony execs (who also still has the film license to Spider-Man)
Disney wants in on the action because of the massive success that Spider-Man: Far From Home garnered during its global run. The film actually made $1 Billion, the biggest that Sony has earned for their films so far. Marvel/Disney brought home $50 million. Disney wants to get that 50/50 split too because they feel that Spider-Man wouldn’t reach that number if it did not piggyback on the massive popularity of Avengers: Endgame.
Sony on the other hand thinks that they can already do without Marvel as they are confident of the abilities of director Jon Watts, actor Tom Holland and producer Amy Pascal to make the third Spider-Man movie as exciting and entertaining.
Spider-Man debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting with “Captain America: Civil War” then appeared in his solo movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, then jumps back to Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and then the recent “Far From Home”.
