A Batman Returns in Batman # 60 (Spoilers)

This week’s issue of Batman, Batman # 60, ends with a surprising twist and its all thanks to writer Tom King and artist Mikel Janin.

Full spoilers ahead

So in this issue, we find three plots working side by side. Penguin has taken refuge in the Batcave and is interacting with Alfred Pennyworth, who was ordered to guard Cobblepot while staying in the cave.

The second subplot is Jim Gordon officially losing faith on Batman thanks to the caped crusader’s last few actions such as beating up Mr. Freeze too badly.

The third is Batman’s attempt at finding more information about Bane and his so-called control over Arkham. And to squeeze out the information, he beats up guys like Maxie Zeus, Firefly and even Kite Man (Hell yeah).

As the story rolls, we end up in the Batcave once more. In the midst of a conversation between Penguin and Alfred Pennyworth, things go silent.

Cobblepot gets a beating from an unknown assailant.

Meanwhile, Gordon has become fed up with Batman’s current actions after learning that KGBeast was recovered and was badly beaten in Russia. And the fact that most of the Rogues have been left beaten within an inch of their lives.

When Batman returns to the cave, he suspects that something is wrong.

Alfred had a great way of revealing who the intruder is.

For me this was a surprising development for a number of reasons.

  1. Throughout Tom King’s run we were led to believe that Bane was solely responsible for all the bad things happening with Batman’s life. He even orchestrated the fall of Batman and Catwoman’s wedding.

2. We explicitly saw the death of Flashpoint Thomas Wayne in The Button. So how is he alive once more? He was even in Bane’s court in Arkham (see that final page for Batman # 50 above)

We definitely have this good mystery in the Batman books. Can’t wait for the next few issues. Batman # 60 is now out in stores.
