Netflix Picks Up Lucifer Series
Lucifer together with his cohorts gets the last minute save thanks to Netflix as the streaming service has announced that they are picking up the TV series.
Deadline reports that Netflix swooped in to save the series from permanent cancellation after Fox had decided to cancel the series altogether.
The series, which will now RETURN for its fourth season, followed another hit series Brooklyn Nine Nine as another saved series which declared that it will be picking up the series before the end of the business day.
The story of how Lucifer was saved is also one for the books. Both fans and cast members alike had petitioned on social media for a pickup; even going as far as making a hashtag for this called #SaveLucifer. Meanwhile, the show’s producers, WB also shopped the series around until getting the attention of Netflix and heated rival Amazon.
There was a bit of problem though with the pick up from Netflix because the first three seasons were under contract with Hulu for streaming. Plus they also have licensing challenges in Europe where the license is held by different corporate entities. Once the deals were ironed out though, Netflix easily managed to announce the acquisition.
Interestingly enough, this is also the first DC series that’ll be categorized as a “Netflix Original”, paving the way for potentially other DC Comics series in Netflix, which also streams and produces Marvel stuff like “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage”.
Lucifer, based on the comic book characters created by Neil Gaiman for DC’s Vertigo Imprint, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for Vertigo, stars Ellis, Lauren German, Rachael Harris, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aimee Garcia, Tricia Helfer, Scarlett Estevez and Kevin Alejandro.
The story of the original fallen angel continued in Season 3, with the charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Ellis), helping LAPD detective Chloe Decker (German) take down criminals.
Lucifer is produced by WBTV in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television. The series is executive-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, Joe Henderson, Ildy Modrovich, Sheri Elwood and KristieAnne Reed.
