Ella Jay Basco Cast as Cassandra Cain

Birds of Pretty continued to pick up speed with the announcement of Ella Jay Basco being cast as Cassandra Cain aka Orphan.

The character was the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. She was raised to fight and had not developed how to speak properly. She eventually found Batman and gained his trust, and soon was operating under the mantle of the new Batgirl. Subsequent events forced her out of the role and she found a new identity as Black Bat during the Batman Inc. story arc.

She later settled on a new code name called Orphan and continued to operate as an ally and operative of Batman.

This will be the first major role for Basco who had previously appeared in Veep, Super Doughnuts, and Grey’s Anatomy.

She will be joining other cast members like Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Black Canary), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress) and Rosie Perez (Renee Montoya). They will also go up against Black Mask who will be played by Ewan McGregor.

Birds of Prey is expected to drop 2020. It’s directed by Cathy Yan.
