Birds of Prey Casts Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary
Some developments now for the Birds of Prey project. Variety initially reports that the WB has found the actresses to play Huntress and Black Canary, the two heroines who will join forces to take on Gotham City mob boss Black Mask.
For Helena Bertillini aka Huntress, the studio has reportedly gone with Scott Pilgrim actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead. While most fanboys and fangirls remember her for her role as Ramona Flowers, I fondly remember her for her performance in “Eternal Sunshine in a Spotless Mind” starring opposite Jim Carrey.
In comics lore, Huntress was the daughter of mob boss whose family gets murdered leaving only her as the sole survivor. She uses her skills and trains further to become the vigilante Huntress and crosses paths with Batman and later with Vic Sage aka the Question.
She was a stellar character too in Justice League Unlimited, again paired up with Question and did a memorable episode together with Green Arrow and her teammate Black Canary.
Speaking of Black Canary, the Variety post also named actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary aka Dinah Lance for the Hollywood flick.
The actress has appeared in other movies such as True Blood, Jack, ER and House just to name a few. Meanwhile, her character Black Canary has already seen a lot of popularity on TV as she’s a staple of Team Arrow on CW’s Arrow starring Stephen Amell.
It’s going to be a while before we see these two in costume and before that, we also need some confirmation that they are indeed the official casts. On that end, we have to wait for WB to cast the right Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl/Oracle to round up the original BoP trio. We do know that we have Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn once more for this.
Birds of Prey is slated for release 2020.
