Thefanboyseo.com’s TOP 10 Movies of 2017

In a few hours, it’ll be 2018 already and as always, I’m obliged to do a top 10 list for the movies that came out 2017 and I know what you’re thinking, “Number 1 would either be a superhero movie or Star Wars”. All I can say is, NO.

10. Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan’s offering this year is historic and epic but so dragging. Still it was beautifully made and well-written. It’s just awfully paced. Worth seeing again? Hell yes!

9. Justice League

Zack Snyder’s Justice League had the markings of a great movie but ultimately had a few problems here and there with viewers including Henry Cavill’s CGI upper lip. Still for DC’s big budget film, the film managed to capture my attention plus it made me laugh and tear up a bit. There’s also a great teaser (2 actually) for things to come. Hopefully, by dropping Snyder from the creative process and going about development of a sequel by somebody who loves comics and actually knows what he or she is doing.

8. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

I loved this Matthew Vaughn film solely for the drug war message. Nuff said. The press screening me and my wife attended went wild with the film’s “kill the users” moment and how it rang true in the real world.

7. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Loved this movie and its a perfectly translation of Spider-Man and Peter Parker as characters. Jon Watts did an incredible job of fleshing out a real, honest-to-goodness Peter Parker, that’s plagued with insecurities. Sad that the movie was bogged with a bit of non-believers who think the science-Spidey was a bit too much.

6. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Like I said in my review, Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi was good but it still falls flat to Empire Strikes Back. Still the concept of legacy and a new world almost free from Skywalkers didn’t rub the fans the right way. As for this Star Wars fan, I totally loved what they did with the franchise especially how they ended the story for Luke Skywalker.

5. Patay Na si Jesus

Oh wow. A Filipino movie amidst all the Hollywood blockbusters. Victor Villanueva’s Cebuano dialect movie starring Jaclyn Jose is a masterpiece for this year. It’s got comedy and drama in the right doses and is also a cathartic experience not just for the characters but also for the viewer.

4. Baby Driver

Edgar Wright’s stylish and entertaining drama put me at the edge of my seat. You got a killer cast (sans Kevin Spacey), a killer OSt and a lot of great looking visuals. This was a surprising flick to see for me.

3. Logan

I’m a Wolverine fan all throughout and I think James Mangold did an awesome job with Logan’s swan song in Logan, which is a loose adaptation of Old Man Logan among other few storylines. It’s heartbreaking, sad and glorious and opens the potential for people to discover other mutant characters. This is also Hugh Jackman’s last performance as the feral X-Man which all the more makes “Logan” a bittersweet masterpiece.

2. Coco

I was so wrong by quickly dismissing Disney/Pixar’s Coco. I really thought it was just another ripoff of “The Book of Life”. Turns out I was so wrong. It’s more than that. It’s actually a well-made dive into Mexico’s “Dia Delos Muertos” or “Day of the Dead” and i re-examination of love, family and music. It’s also got a charming musical score and the catchiest songs this year for an animated feature length film. Plus, that moment when Miguel does his version of “Remember Me” really made me cry (I’m a big softie like that).

  1. Wonder Woman

Where Justice League failed, Wonder Woman flourished. Nevermind a couple of plot fars including a forgettable villain in Ares. We got a great superhero movie and the lead’s a female too. This did wonders (no pun intended) for DC and WB who before this had BvS (which I still like) and Suicide Squad (could have been better).  Patty Jenkins also proved that creative genius and a beautiful Gal is a new formula for a male-saturated market.

Obviously I couldn’t go beyond 10 but here are some of my honorable mentions for 2017.

Honorable Mentions:

Thor: Ragnarok

Annabelle: Creation

Blade Runner 2049
