Write About Love looks forward to bigger audiences following MMFF awards and critical acclaim
28 DECEMBER 2019 — From the get-go, it would seem like TBA Studios’ Write About Love has everything going for it: a fresh take on the rom-com genre, a winning soundtrack and a multi-talented cast.
But despite some early favorable feedback from its premiere screening, the film struggled in the first few days of the 45th Metro Manila Film Festival as many moviegoers instead trooped to see the usual family comedies headlined by stars that have been dominating the annual Christmas season festival for years.
Write About Love, which opened on Christmas Day was even pulled out from cinemas where it did not perform as well as the expected top grossers.
The film, however, pulled the biggest surprise of the MMFF Awards Night when it took home a whopping eight awards including Second Best Picture and Special Jury Prize for a full-length feature. Write About Love also won Best Supporting Actor for Joem Bascon, Best Supporting Actress for Yeng Constantino, Best Screenplay for Crisanto B. Aquino and Janyx Regalo, Best Editing for Vanessa De Leon, Best Musical Score for Jerrold Tarog and Best Original Song for the hit single Ikaw Ang Akin performed by Yeng Constantino and written by Crisanto B. Aquino.
These honors have validated what critics have been raving about the film all along.
Philippine Daily Inquirer entertainment editor Rito Asilo called Write About Love a “gem of a film” that will win audiences with “its simplicity and affable earnestness.”
Reviewing the film for ABS-CBN News, Fred Hawson described it as a “sweet, smart and engaging ‘film within a film’ that highlights the various forms and styles the Pinoy rom-com had evolved through the years.”
GMA News described the film as “smart, intimate” and even “awe-inspiring” likewise pointed out that Write About Love is “why we love romantic movies so much” and “should delight anyone who is looking for love this Christmas season.”
Echoing a similar view, Wanggo Gallaga of Click The City says Write About Love will speak to anyone who has “known love or pain by any degree” while Earl Maghirang of popular blog, TheFanBoySEO wrote that while “the film finds a good balance between drama and comedy, you can feel from the get go that the film is a romantic film through and through.”
On social media, there is a strong clamor for Write About Love to be screened in more theaters given its critical acclaim and recent slew of MMFF awards. Netizens feel that the film deserves to be seen by more people and that can only be possible if it is screened in more cinemas.
Write About Love has already resonated with audiences who have been tweeting some of its more memorable lines like “You’re my greatest love and also my greatest pain…but I will choose to forgive you every day,” “People who love are capable of hurting,” and “Walang love story na walang pain.”
Write About Love is TBA Studios’ official entry to the MMFF 2019. Directed by Crisanto B. Aquino and also starring Miles Ocampo and Rocco Nacino, the film received a G rating (suitable for all audiences) from the MTRCB and a B-Grading from the Cinema Evaluation Board.
The film’s award-winning official music soundtrack by Yeng Constantino was released by Star Music Philippines.
