Ant-Man and the Wasp Review (Non-Spoiler)

Here’s my Ant-Man and the Wasp review which doubles back after all the intensity and shocks that we got from Avengers Infinity War with… humor and a lot of retracings. Yeah. The film stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer.

We’ve got a few new characters for this second outing of Ant-Man and the Wasp. We have Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo and Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp.

PROS

Peyton Reed managed to inject new life to an already formulaic movie. It’s still pretty much a heist movie but this time we’re going all over the place following Hank, Scott and Hope as they find a way to save Janet Van Dyne from the Quantum Realm.

The movie had a great way of tying into other Marvel Studios movies like “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War”. Some were in the form of dialogues while others come in “flashbacks”.

The chase scene was awesome for all the logical stuff they did with their shrinking powers. They really did a great number on the use of that Hello Kitty Pez dispenser and all that.

Giant Man makes an impressive appearance here with a comedic entry too. All 5 minutes or so of Scott Lang as Giant Man was perfect.

Ghost was an awesome character. It tried to shy away from the two dimensional villains that Marvel Studios has given us in the decade that they have been offering fans and moviegoers.

Everybody here had brought along a quip or a joke along the way but Michael Peña brought his arsenal here. I’m happy to report in this Ant-Man and the Wasp review that the jokes keep on coming here.

First 5 minutes for the film? Made me tear up a bit thanks to a de-aged Michael Douglas and preteen Hope Van Dyne talking about the “death” of Janet Van Dyne. Good on Marvel Studios for making this decision early on in the story.

Jimmy Woo (Randal Park) was good here. Kinda flimsy from time to time but he was a great comic relief for this movie. I do wish that we got to see the heroic side of the character. Alas, Marvel made it clear that this wasnt Agents of Atlas Jimmy Woo.

At its core, its still a heist movie with the stakes higher and operating in this new status quo created still by the Avengers.

CONS

Peyton Reed pretty much took the safe road by incorporating stuff from the first movie, thereby making the brunt of the film stale.

The action was a bit lacking. These were supposed to be set pieces and they really are, but it also feels that it could have been expanded or it could be grander.

While the movie tries to offer a solution to all the problems that Marvel movies had in general (i.e. killing the villains) but while this is good, you still have this sense of dread that things could go “Civil War” and the villain death is just reserved for the next movie or in another MCU movie.

The second Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credit scene was crappy. Like shit, like we could have gotten better.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Review – Verdict

8/10

Sure I liked the movie but it didnt really do great for me. At best it strived to flesh out all the new and old characters as well as serve as a palate cleanser from all the death and destruction of Infinity War. At its worst, Ant-Man and the Wasp was a retracing of the first movie by upgrading things here and there.
