After a decade or so, Jean Grey finally returns to the Marvel Universe and I’m happy that Marvel’s actually hyping up the book.
Without spoiling this issue, the pieces are coming together for Jean’s resurrection. But the thing is, just like other grand resurrections in popculture, it takes a lot of drama and weirdness. The X-Men (Kitty’s Gold team) respond to a weird ping on Cerebra’s radar. And by gosh that ping is what any X-Fan should be thankful for. Because it harkens the return of Jean.
Art is dynamic and pops out as expected from Yu and Alanguilan. Then they shift into overdrive with bright colors and larger than life poses, something Yu’s been really good at.
There’s also the page count. Its more than what I expected. So the book itself doesn’t feel lacking. Civil War II had a lot of pages but they felt, i dunno, inferior or weak. Phoenix Resurrection’s felt like it had a lot of pages. In Filipino we call this “sulit”.
The story, for me, is exciting. Sure I’ve seen this setup in other mediums and even other books but the prospect of the pay off towards the end is enticing enough for any X-Men fan. Heck, this already warrants a bump in sales for X-Men: Red.
The action sequences were great too. I love how they managed to utilize the current roster of X-Men teams available (namely Gold, Blue and the Weapon X crew) and threw in old threats and classic villains that seem to boomerang back to Jean Grey. The locations were a bit vague though and may get some additional context next issue. Still seeing Rogue being able to school the young Cyclops, Angel, Beast and Iceman is something interesting.
I would really love to post spoilers here but other than the major spoiler post for Phoenix Resurrection I posted earlier, ALL the stuff here is worth the money you dropped for the issue. Speaking of which, you may want to pick up the J. Scott Campbell variant covers because those covers look BEAUTIFUL!
