C.B. Cebulski is the new Marvel Editor in Chief

Bleedingcool.com breaks the story of Marvel’s appointment of a new editor-in-chief and its a person Filipino comic geeks are pretty familiar already – C.B. Cebulski.

His first shot in the comics biz started in 1997 when he landed the role of editor for CPM Manga after which he became a freelance editor and did some editing for Image Comics’ titles like Noble Causes. In 2002, he joined Marvel where he wrote for Marvel Mangaverse and later became Ralph Macchio’s associate editor. This was also where he did editing for high profile titles like NYX, Wolverine: Snikt and Runaways.

Cebulski took a quick break from Marvel to work once again as a freelance editor and did a couple of Image titles. He went back to Marvel a year later where he started the talent management department. Cebulski was promoted to head talent scout for as Senior Vice President of Creator and Content Development where he was able to hire creators like Adi Granov, Sara Pichelli, Steve McNiven and even Jonathan Hickman.

Last year, Cebulski was again promoted to Marvel’s VP of International Business Deveopment & Brand Management. According to him, the job was pretty much just “developing the company’s brand in Asia”. Cebulski brokered several deals in this time including partnership with Japan’s Kodansha, Korea’s Daum, and China’s NetEase. He also spearheaded Marvel’s localized stories debuting in several Asian markets.

“Spending these last 18 months in Asia, and introducing more fans here to the depth of the Marvel Universe, I’ve seen first-hand how our comics and characters constantly bring joy into people’s lives all over the world,” Cebulski explained in Marvel’s official statement. “I hope to continue capturing that creative magic here at home, and deliver inspirational and entertaining stories that are true to the classic Marvel DNA, but built with an expanding global mindset.”

According to Marvel’s release, Cebulski will oversee all day-to-day editorial and creative aspects of Marvel Comics, while continuing in his role expanding Marvel into new countries. For this new position, Cebulski will relocate back to New York after 18 months spent living in Shanghai.

“C.B. is one of the most well-known, liked and respected editors and personalities in the comics industry. He has a keen understanding of the Marvel brand, and knows the importance of publishing within the larger Marvel ecosystem,” said Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley in a statement. “As our characters continue to reach unprecedented levels of global popularity, we need to ensure our core comic business sets the standard with fresh and compelling graphic storytelling that excites both our longtime fan base and new fans. Marvel has set a high bar for super hero stories for over 75 years, and we believe C.B. is perfectly positioned to take Marvel Comics to new heights.”

So what happens to current EIC Axel Alonso? Nothing yet but the company did thank the guy for his work. This also marks the second major movement in Marvel’s creative landscape as Brian Michael Bendis has signed an exclusive contract for DC Comics just last week.
