I Know What You Did Last Summer Review (2025)
Here’s my I Know What You Did Last Summer Review which opens July 30 in cinemas from Columbia Pictures Philippines!

SYNOPSIS
When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. One year later, the past comes back to haunt them as they learn someone knows what they did last summer. Stalked by a mysterious killer, they soon seek help from two survivors of the legendary Southport massacre of 1997.
TRAILER
A new version of IKWYDLS is finally here in 2025 and its directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt and more!

I’ll give it to the folks who made the movie, they did want to capture the essence of the 90s classic slasher/ thriller while at the same time incorporating modern nuances and elements. The setting is still the same place, a few of the Hollywood A-listers and cast members also return in one way or form and the classic Fisherman killer is also back. So it’s a nice nostalgia bomb that goes off at the start. The new cast range from interesting to downright boring with the strongest role given to Chase Sui Wonders who plays Ava. Not diving too much on this but I do want to note that most of the “killings” that were done throughout the film’s run time didn’t really have any impact. We should be scared and worried for these characters who were being stalked but I just didn’t have anything well except for mermaid girl Danica played by Madelyn Cline.

Yes, the kills are still good but there were some moments that I felt was either rushed or hastily done. They just didn’t have the impact as the original movie or any slasher flick at all.
There’s also a controversial bit here that I want to just glaze over because I don’t want to spoil the film for you. One particular character does a heel turn and as a fan of the original movie (not the sequel), it felt like a big diss. Was there no any other way to come up with reasons to hunt down these stupid young adults? It would have been great if we retained the character’s face status but alas, this is what we got.
It did feel nice (and sad at the time) to see familiar faces in this one. Jennifer Love Hewitt still looks fine while Freddie Prinze Jr still has that onscreen charm but all the praise is given to Sarah Michelle Gellar who pretty much just did a cameo for the film but that few minutes of screentime was pretty awesome.

VERDICT
I Know What You Did Last Summer IS a nice palette cleanser after a month or so of summer blockbusters. It’s an OK movie with the main appeal is having brought back two stars that aren’t appearing in Hollywood projects that much. I dig the casting and the throwback and the classic elements from the original movie. Great look for the film’s two main leads Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders while the rest floundered.
