Absolute Wonder Woman # 1 Review
Here’s my Absolute Wonder Woman # 1 review written by Kelly Thompson with art by Hayden Sherman and is now available now in stores!
There will be spoilers for this post so…
In a world influence by Darkseid, the heroes are still heroes but they have a tougher time and more problems to deal with and our favorite Amazon has also fallen victim to this handicap. In this modern version and alternate universe take on Diana Prince, she grew up so far away from Paradise.
The script and dialogue reads great thanks to Kelly Thompson’s awesome writing. She’s managed to distill the core essence of Wonder Woman while at the same time also delivering the good action sequences and making her cool.
Hayden Sherman’s art looks good and has it’s own style. It’s different from marquee Wonder Woman books and issues that’s been done like what we got for the New 52 but at the same time, it’s very nice to look at especially those flashback pages between Diana and her “mother” Circe.
Speaking of Circe, it’s such a HUGE change to see this Wonder Woman baddie ultimately become the mother figure for Wonder Woman as she grew up. And I like that she follows the trope of reluctant parent, initially leaving baby Diana to fend on her won and then later embracing her role as mother and not a warden.
Lore building and further backstories are also exciting for this book with questions popping up and it sucks readers in because it intrigues us with what exactly happens. It intentionally keeps itself vague to make us want to read more and yes, for me, they succeeded.
The art for this book is unique and yet manages to tell the story beautifullly particularly during the growth and development of Diana into the warrior princess that she is.
The whole re-envisioning of Wonder Woman is also something I look forward to see more in the comics months. Hopefully this sticks for a long long time because for me, this entire look also encompasses what Absolute Wonder Woman is. Changing the look down the road feels like it would hurt the brand but that’s just me.
Absolute Wonder Woman # 1 is now in stores.
10/10 for me
