The Boys Season 4 episode 1 and 2 Review

The Boys return with their fourth season as complications arise in the ongoing war between The Boys and The Seven with a bunch of new characters introduced once more including a new character for Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

So lets do an A-Train and speed things up on this series Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson

We’ll go through The Boys Season 4 Episode 1 and Episode 2 so SPOILER ALERT for stuff that could get mentioned here and there.

More Violence and Gore

Expect the trademark gore and blood from this Prime Video series and they have found a way to push the envelope a little further for both violence and sexual misconduct and anything lewd in between. Be ready for some visuals that includes a superhero version of a movie that’s so detestable that the director actually got death threats over it.

The Politics

The politics in this series is what makes it interesting for me and they have that still and even expands it to internal conflict between the members of The Boys. As usual that ol’ devil Billy Butcher is in the center of it all causing problems for Mother’s Milk aka MM especially as he assumes command of the unit.

Then there’s also a wayward deal between Butcher and series’ secondary antagonist Victoria Neuman who also happens to have powers of her own, something the team are aware of and are scared to deal with. So it would seem like something that would hang around for the rest of the season.

Butcher also has to deal with his failure to kill Homelander in the last season which greatly affected how he sees himself and how the team sees him, a factor that could come back in later episodes this season.

There’s also the deal with Homelander who has new aspirations in mind although that could pivot as we reach the season finale. For now though, he still has to deal with the repercussions of his actions from season 3 where he killed a man in public and everybody cheered for him, making him believe that he can get away with anything.

Humor and Wit

The Boys also never lost a beat when it came to the humor and it comes from unsurprising places such as Karen Fukuhara’s Kimiko aka Female of the Species as she deals with the trauma of her past and even Chase Crawford’s The Deep returning with more shenanigans including an octopus lover named Ambrosius. But I really did love most of Kimiko’s comedic moments and sardonic wit. Can we see more of drunk Kimiko soon?

Time is running out

One of the driving forces for this season at least from The Boys season 4 episode 1 and 2 is the concept of time. Homelander gets hit hard with the saying “Time Waits for No One” as he realizes there are signs of aging on his doorstep. He may be invulnerable outside but he’s definitely growing older. This leads him to do some rather questionable things including hiring a new member for his team named Sister Sage or just Sage, one of the smartest person’s in the world. He asks her to join him and act as his legal advisor and work as a member of the Seven. This puts her in a tough spot especially since she’s working with members who don’t trust her and Ashley. I look forward to seeing more things from her.

Time running out is also what pushes Butcher to be Billy Butcher. After taking that version of Compound V in Season 3, Butcher is now sick and dying and feels like he doesnt have enough time to kill them all let alone take down The Seven. Now more than ever he needs the team but at the worst possible time.

Character Developments

A few characters are also in a tight spot like Annie January formerly known as Starlight who has since left Vought and The Seven and aims to provide a better world. This season shows her as a reluctant leader who we all know has the guts to be that but also weighed down by her inexperience. We’ll definitely see her more of a tough superheroine either this season or the final season. For now, she’s definitely gone through a lot and is a character to look forward too.

A-Train also has some serious doubts about his current role and feels useless and a fake. He’s so having mixed feelings about this restructured Seven with Homelander really being the leader which I think will be discussed later. It also doesn’t help that he’s actually helping sell a lie about his origins which hurt him and his brother.

Frenchie also gets his time to shine here as he enters a relationship that may or may not explode as the season progresses. This also marks a growth in his relationship with Kimiko who confirms that they are not happening so he’s free to do whatever he wants when it comes to love.

Extra Stuff

Be on the lookout for surprise cameos in this season as well as a surprise voice for one of the characters.

Overall, I’m once again hooked with The Boys and I am considering doing a binge watch of all of the past seasons and even Gen V. The fun stuff, the violent stuff and the compelling drama continues and we’re lucky to get a series like this.
