D23 Expo 2022: Mufasa movie announced

Now this D23 Expo announcement was something I wasn’t expecting. Disney is apparently making a Mufasa movie which is pretty much a prequel for The Lion King both the animated and the live action.

Mufasa movie

The movie is officially titled Mufasa: The Lion King but if it were me I’d probably call it The Lion King origins: Mufasa just like that Hugh Jackman Wolverine origin movie from the late 2000s.

According to various sources, the film will be helmed by Barry Jenkins and is scheduled for release 2024. This movie will reportedly tell the story of Mufasa as he rises to power and become the king of the Pridelands. We will also be getting younger versions of The Lion King characters like Timon, Pumbaa and Rafiki. It’s also been confirmed that both Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner will be reprising their role from The Lion King live-action movie.

“Mufasa was actually an orphaned cub who had to navigate the world alone by himself, and in telling this story, we get to experience the real journey of how Mufasa found his place in the circle of life,” said Jenkins of the character, who goes on to become Simba’s father.

Sadly, we won’t be having James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa from the original The Lion King animated film.
