Prey’s God of War easter egg is pretty clever

Dan Trachtenberg‘s Prey is generating a lot of positive buzz either because its a great action movie, a big win for Native American communities or because its an awesome Predator installment but did you know that there’s a big God of War easter egg in the film?

Before we talk about about this, SPOILER ALERT for PREY.

The first overt and obvious reference they lifted from God of War would be the tomahawk that Naru (Amber Midthunder) used early on in the film. Doesn’t really do much but if you pop open your PS4 and play the game, you’ll realize that the tomahawk projectile is very similar to how Kratos throws his enchanted axe all throughout the game.

In the God of War lore, this axe was called the Leviathan Axe and was a gift the former God of War got from his wife Laufaye. Just like Thor’s enchanted hammer Mjolnir, the Leviathan Axe will also return to its owner once thrown.

Trachtenberg has stated in interviews that they wanted to incorporate that in the movie which is why Naru’s practicing the use of the tomahawk.

The second God of War reference in PREY was the Feral Predator’s weapon, which was a retractable shield that pops out of its gauntlet.

It definitely looks like another of Kratos’ weapons we find later in the game called the Guardian Shield.

And just like Kratos’ shield, its also circular in design to make it easier to keep or hide when not in use. Plus as seen in the film, its pretty destructive even if its mainly used as a defensive tool.
