Sonic X Shadow Generations Reviews
SEGA speeds through the season’s new releases with their somewhat new and old game Sonic X Shadow Generations that’s now available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
The game is a part a new adventure starring Shadow the Hedgehog and half a remaster of the 2011 classic Sonic Generations but the title is an instant classic in my book.
The game lets you choose between which game to play and for this review I went first with Shadow and then Sonic because the Shadow end is the really new one while the Sonic side of things is the remake. Something that you really should know from the get go.
I did enjoy the Shadow part of the game mainly because of the deeper story including Shadow’s history and his ties to something nefarious which I don’t want to spoil.
His bit also takes advantage of the technology we have to give us stunning visuals whether it’s 2D or 3D and the fact that they seamlessly integrate this into most missions is instantly turning me into a fan.
And it’s also because of the tech that we get to see great effects for both Shadow and Sonic with Shadow having a slight advantage. While playing as Shadow, not only do you dash around but also zap enemies, kick them high into the air and the turned into a projectile and a whole lot more.
Boss Battles are also fun and innovative like with the first boss, the Biolizard, that was such a fun boss fight with the creature giving Shadow a hard time but at the same time giving you the chance to apply what you’ve learned which makes it very satisfying. The learning curve isn’t hard too. I was expecting this to drive me crazy but it’s just right. It took me several tries to beat some zones but when muscle memory kicks in, it’s going to be cool runnings from there.
The backgrounds and stages are also fun to look at whether it’s the chaotic space station that’s the initial setting for Shadow to the limbo-like world he finds himself in everything looks great. Even the composition of the stages were well planned for both speedy critters.
Sonic Generations on the other hand gets a nice shiny update and you can see where the improvements are and where the classic game’s base version is. I love that it’s less fussy than Shadow Generations in terms of moving from one world to another. I also enjoyed the fact that pudgy classic Sonic doesn’t really talk that much.
That bit’s story is a little more tame and linear and is easy to digest.
