REVIEW: Time Cut

What would you do if you get sent to the past at the time before the murder of your sister at the hands of a serial killer? How would you approach this? This is the premise of the Netflix film Time Cut directed by Hannah MacPherson and stars Madison Bailey, Antonia Gentry and Griffin Gluck.

The movie felt like a Disney-fied slasher movie to be honest. Younger sister lives in the shadow of her dead sister in a town that never forgot the murder spree. She’s smart and promising but is burdened with her parent’s issues over the death of their first daughter. But it all turns out well in the end.

I did love how it’s a huge nostalgia bomb with the fashion, the lingo and even the music reflecting (at least on the surface level) what the early 2000s was like. Made me think at how less dependent our lives were back with less Facebook and entertainment because our phones totally sucked. But yeah, that was a big win for this for me.

The two leads for the film were so-so for me. They just weren’t connecting at all but they did a pretty decent job telling this sci-fi / slasher story.

Speaking of sci-fi and slasher, I have to commend Netflix for putting out this type of mish-mash of films which is clearly inspired by that Blumhouse Production of Freaky Friday (that’s a stretch but kind of anyway). The film had a lot of nice moments but it never did hit the same level of thrills that a horror film nerd could appreciate. Still they did manage to build some nice tensions through the set pieces here and there.

Verdict: 7/10

Had a few fun moments but seriously felt like it didn’t hit what it wanted to go for which was a slasher/sci-fi film. The acting was so-so and it really did feel and look like a Disney Teen movie with some R-Rated elements thrown into the mix. Good effort though but I’ll just go and watch that Blumhouse Productions version of Freak Friday where they swapped bodies with a serial killer played by Vince Vaughn.
