Absolute Batman # 1 Spoilers – the big changes to this alternate universe Batman by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta from DC Comics!
I’m doing a separate review for the book so now let’s look at how much different this book is from the standard Batman we are used to read and see.
So the whole story follows a linear flow but there’s a ton of stuff that Snyder purposely left vague or not drawn out properly.
For starters, Batman in the Absolute Universe isn’t rich. He’s not a billionaire but he still manages to get to the peak human being at a young age. Bruce continually trains his body and he does so in a gym owned by his friend Waylon Jones who loves reptiles including crocs.
We also find out that Bruce grew up with his rogues minus the Joker. They even play poker together and even have Selina Kyle aka Catwoman to join them once again.
Gotham City is also going through a massive crime wave courtesy of the mysterious “Party Animals”. And in this Darkseid-infused universe, Jim Gordon is the mayor, with Harvey Bullock as a loyal police officer together with Gordon’s daughter, Barbara Gordon.
I guess this is where we’ll see some bits and pieces of the Batgirl movie.
Snyder also went full throttle with Alfred’s backstory of being an agent of sorts but since he did not become a butler for the Waynes, he was working as a contract killer for an unknown organization.
He was also tasked with taking down Batman whenever he makes a move or interferes with his plans which actually happens later in the issue. Batman is strong enough to take down Alfred and even steals his shotgun which comes back to play later.
The encounter with Batman forces Alfred Pennyworth to investigate who Batman really is and easily deduces that he and civil engineer Bruce Wayne are one and the same. Through several pages, we see that Bruce used his brain and trained his body after the death of his father, who was taken down by a crazed gunman during their trip to the zoo together with his future Batman rogue’s gallery of friends.
And also its revealed that Martha Wayne is still alive and Bruce grew up with her even during his “rebellious” phase.
The ending for the issues, the epilogue rather shows Pennyworth reporting to his bosses and telling them that their previous target aka The Joker is now in the Philippines.
