Twisters Movie Review: A Whirlwind of Nostalgia
Twisters review by Erika Diaz! The film is now showing in SM Cinemas and other cinemas nationwide! There was an excited buzz in the air. You could feel the energy of the crowd as you walked through the theater. The wind is picking up, and you know something good is about to happen. See what I did there?
As a standalone sequel to the 1996 original, Twisters builds on what we know and love: MASSIVE TORNADOES, HIGH ENERGY CHASE SCENES, AND A BREWING LOVE STORY THAT TIES IT ALL IN: the makings of a hit.
I came in blind. I didn’t know what to expect from this film, except that Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People, Where the Crawdad Sings), Anthony Ramos (Hamilton, In the Heights), and Glen Powell (Hit Man) starred in this exhilarating adventure.
Fair Warning for the Twisters Movie: There is No Warning. There is no Escape.
The movie hits you with a whirlwind right off the bat. A retired tornado chaser and meteorologist is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team and new technologies for collecting data on tornadoes. There, they meet a charming and reckless YouTube storm chaser and his team.
The entire film is a walk down memory lane for disaster movie aficionados. Although the film focused more on the science behind the twisters, which at times had me lost in jargon, instead of focusing on the tornadoes as just big pillars of destructive winds, the film respected and focused on the people affected by them and how they cope. (And how not to hide under overpasses and inside cars.)
I will admit that some parts were totally predictable and over-the-top, and some lines felt forced, like in the scenes before the climax when Kate (Edgar-Jones) was at the height of her emotional vulnerability. The plot did not resonate with me as strongly as it should have, probably because I haven’t really experienced big tornadoes nor have I really thought about them. Because of that, I feel like I wasn’t able to appreciate the films as much as I would have.
It’s a movie about the weather and a boy and a girl meeting and trying to stop the impossible, with a lot of science talk that you don’t really need to listen to. What I liked the most was the work that went into the research and accuracy of tornadoes, how they form, and their devastating effects.
But if you are looking for stunning visuals, great cinematography, and a plot line with a lot of adrenaline and a dash of romance, this movie is for you. This movie is a thrill ride for most parts and is not as frustrating as disaster movies of old.
The newest from @WarnerBrosPH and from the producers of Jurassic Park.
