Renfield is a fun unapologetic gorefest of a vampire film from director Chris McKay, starring the over the top performances of Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, and Awkwafina.

A contemporary take on the Dracula-Renfield powertrip dynamic, it examines Renfield’s need for emancipation after more than a century in Dracula’s service as his familiar. Through the film’s fantasy elements, it discusses themes of co-dependency, manipulation, abuse, and narcissism. Despite being a deconstruction of the Dracula myth, it also pays tribute to the legacy of the iconic vampire onscreen espercially to the 1931 Universal Classic, starring Bela Lugosi.

All in all, Renfield is a fun watch that is also a feelgood film in its own right.
