Things once again pick up with the third episode for this season of The Sandman with Morpheus going to the waking world to recover his pouch of sand from Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) as we are introduced to her character in true Constantine/ Hellblazer fashion, in the middle of a case where demons run afoul. Only this story is not finished instead only being revealed as a nightmare for Johanna.

We also get to meet obscure DC characters from its occult side of things like Mad Hettie and a gender swapped Ric the Vic.

This episode also gives us a look at the initial unease between Morpheus and Constantine with the former looking to quickly get his sand back the latter unwilling to help. Amidst this, viewers are also given a peek into this version of Constantine’s way to earn a living all the while giving a glimpse of how traumatized she is after her encounter at the start of the episode.

There’s a lot of softer moments here in this episode surprisingly. There’s that moment when Constantine calls out Morpheus for being selfish and him seeing humans as people like Roderick Burgess; Johanna Constantine proving to Morpheus that that is not always the case. We even get to see more and more of Patton Oswalt’s awesome role as Matthew the Raven.

There’s a lot of humanity and frailty in this episode and its a nice refresher so to speak for the King of Dreams to remember what makes humans humans and that there is good in them too. And in the end, in the final moments of the episode as Dream takes care of Johanna Constantine’s lover and gives her a good end, viewers see just how good this series is especially for the casual viewers who don’t really know about Sandman and the world of the endless.

Lastly, oh my god, props to Tom Sturridge for his stone cold performance here as Morpheus. He definitely pulled it off quite well.
