What’s up with Valorant’s new map Pearl?
Riot Games is set to release their latest Valorant update aka VALORANT EP 5 Act 1 which also features a new map called Pearl. Let’s take a look at some of the things that comes along with an the little details the devs put in the game.
“Pearl” is the 8th map for the FPS and the first one that is set canonically on Omega Earth. This removes stuff from other maps like doors or teleporters and is just relegated to a three lane map with options for small mid and long range wings.
Attackers will have to descend deep into Defender territory.
They also added in murals from actual Portuguese muralists and also has traditional Portuguese music created and recorded by local artists from Portugal.
According to the devs including level designer Joe Lansford, they wanted to build a straightforward map that demands players to give “committed engagements” minus the mobility of teleporters or ascenders. The goal then is to get simple and strategic gameplay while at the same time getting the twists and turns from all the other Valorant maps.
Brian Yam Valorant Art Lead, Concept adds:
ANSWER: The inspiration for Pearl started from an older underwater theme pitch concept, which was combined with a newer pitch that revolved around a major city flooded from climate change. Concepts were made exploring these two ideas and when we placed the location in Portugal, it got everyone really excited because of its historical and architectural visual potential. Since Pearl takes place on “Omega Earth,” we wanted to explore how Omega Kingdom would approach climate change and how we would convey this idea visually. The idea of showing the sustainment of cities underwater seemed to be the right visual direction that everyone was excited about. It’s a nice visual juxtaposition of Kingdom Industries structures with older structures of Portugal.
