vivo Y31 Review – New breed of budget-friendly smartphone (SRP P12,999)

Vivo has released another good product at the start of the year with the new vivo Y31. Is it worth getting and what should you expect from this new smartphone? Here’s my vivo Y31 review which is now available in the local market with SRP of P12,999!

Check out my unboxing video for the vivo Y31 and don’t forget to like and subscribe to the channel 🙂

Design

The vivo Y31 comes with all the things you’d love and expect from the smartphone brand. We got good quality body with very minimal fuss. The right side features the volume controls and the fingerprint scanner which also doubles as the phone’s power button. Top part houses the SIM tray while the bottom features the headphone port, the type-c USB port and the phone’s main speakers.

Display

The vivo Y31’s display is a cut above the rest for it’s price point. The screen’s bezels are thin and you can almost say its “barely there”. We still have a notch on top but its not that distracting. Unlike the premium siblings released late last year, this smartphone also sports one front camera, which means a bit of a dip for selfies but a big win for entertainment and screen usage.

The phone’s 6.58-inch FHD+ IPS LCD Display (1080 x 2400 Pixels, 401 ppi) with 20:9 Aspect Ratio specs also means that the aspect ratio for the stuff you watch or view is bigger than usual. It’s also complemented by this 6.58 inch LCD screen. So it’s a good buy if you’re heavily into watching Youtube videos on your phone or having a Netflix mobile only plan.

Refresh rate is pretty standard too. But I definitely love the feel of this phone because it looks longer, almost as it the most of it is the screen which is a really good thing for me. Means you get to get more on your social media feed.

Camera

As mentioned before, the vivo Y31 comes with three cameras on the rear namely the 48MP F1.79 (main), the 2MP F2.4 (depth) and the 2MP F2.4 (macro).

The vivo Y31 and its triple camera system

Check out the photos I took with the Y31’s main camera.

If you’re into toy collecting or toy photography or even just plain old mobile photography, you’d be happy to know that the vivo Y31 delivers. It does give off good photos regardless of the time of day you shoot and even if you’re dependent on natural light for your shots just like what I did in the sample shots I posted above.

The smartphone’s camera is also very adaptive when it comes to shooting food which you’ll see in some of my shots below.

(Do check my post on the Ultimate Cheesy bites from Pizza Hut too while we’re looking at that yummy pizza).

And if you’re the outdoor type whose looking for a budget friendly smartphone then you’re safe with the vivo Y31. Check out my outdoor shots…

Caliraya

The photos aren’t “cooked” or overexposed and you can see that the colors are very natural. Recently, the other smartphones that are out in the market tend to overcompensate with the quality of photos but the Y31 is very chill.

The bokeh effect has been improved tremendously

The Y31’s selfie camera is also equipped with 16MP goodness making your selfies look good even without the benefit of an AI system

Battery

I’m totally down with the Y31’s battery which is a 5000 mAh Li-Po Battery (Non-removable) with a 18W Fast Charging system in place. Its fast enough that you can get your phone’s juice up to 70% in 64 minutes.

Benchmarks and Performance

AnTuTu – 188,610
Geekbench – 316 (Single-core), 1,438 (Multi-core), 382 (OpenCL)
3D Mark – 1,179 (SSE – OpenGL ES 3.1), 1,133 (Vulkan)
PC Mark – 5,821 (Work 2.0)

The Y31 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor working hand in hand with a 8GB of RAM. Its definitely good when it comes to social media and for other usages without having to worry about lagging or overheating. You may have some lags though when it comes to playing games. It also has some frame drops here and there so buyer beware.

vivo Y31 Review – Verdict

For this vivo Y31 review, I think its highly recommended especially if you are on a tight budget but still want to experience all the good stuff from playing mobile games to going on Facebook and even recording vlogs or taking selfies. The battery is decent and a full charge can last you a day. The camera is good and the processing power of the phone is OK.
