SSSS Gridman Episode 1 Review
Started a new anime series and its one that spells MAJOR nostalgia. Here’s my SSSS Gridman episode 1 review!
What’s it about?
This is an anime adaptation of the 1993 toku series Denkou Choujin Gridman.
This episode’s an OK start. To be honest I wasn’t expecting too much other than a badass CG Toku Ultra Hero kicking kaiju ass and looking all cool doing it. The basic Ultraman tropes should be here too and I can vaguely remember this particular monster appearing in the US version.
Part of the appeal of SSSS Gridman for me was the fact that I remember watching the American version Supherhuman Samurai Syber-Squad DECADES ago and loving the whole campy vibe it gave even back then. The anime did hit that spot right on for me.
The mystery of who Yuta is and who he was before interfacing with Hyper Agent Gridman is an OK plot. It’s not one of those plots from other anime that reels you in. I did like the voicework they did for the would-be trio of good guys.
Episode 1 went dark in one particular scene with one of Yuta’s classmates hanging around the school after-hours seemingly dying after a wayward blast from the kaiju obliterates the school. That dark mystery is one I’m really more interested in.
That cool fight scene was really worth the wait and the animation by Trigger teases us more awesome moment as we dive further into the series. If I recall correctly, Gridman had different weapons he could use and while I promise I haven’t peeked into spoilers and other content, I know that these weapons will appear soon and I can’t wait for that.
Also let me just leave the intro for the SSSS TV series below, for the nostalgia for fanboys and fangirls like who recall this airing on GMA 7 (or was that ABC-5) all those years ago.
