Why is Your Name Being tagged as Ruben
Ever wondered why there are some anime fans who refer to the iconic 2016 anime Your Name as “Ruben”? Well, worry no more as for this post we answer the question Why is Your Name being tagged as Ruben.
A bit of background for the anime first.
Your Name was a 2016 animated film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. Masashi Ando did animation direction while Masayoshi Tanaka did character designs. Music was also composed by the band Radwimps. Your Name tells the story of Taki, a high school boy in Tokyo and Mitsuha, a high school girl in a rural town, who suddenly and inexplicably begin to swap bodies. The film stars the voices of Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mone Kamishiraishi, Masami Nagasawa and Etsuko Ichihara. Shinkai’s eponymous novel was published a month before the film’s premiere.
A little bit more from Wikipedia.
Your Name was distributed by Toho. It premiered at the Anime Expo 2016 convention in Los Angeles, California on July 3, 2016, and in Japan on August 26, 2016. It was critically acclaimed for its animation, complex narrative, musical score, and emotional weight. The film was also a major commercial success, with a total gross of $359 million, becoming the highest-grossing anime film and Japanese film of all time, the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, the ninth-highest-grossing traditionally animated film, and the 16th-highest-grossing non-English film worldwide. The film won the Best Animated Feature Film award at 49th Sitges Film Festival, the 2016 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, and the 71st Mainichi Film Awards, as well as receiving a nomination for the 40th Japan Academy Prize for the Best Animation of the Year. The film was followed by stand-alone sequel Weathering with You in 2019, in which Taki and Mitsuha appear in supporting roles. An American live-action remake set in the United States is currently in development.
So why Why is Your Name Being tagged as Ruben? Well it came from a Facebook interaction which went completely viral. The post started with an innocent question about a screenshot posted somewhere on Facebook from the anime. Somebody asked the threadstarter what the anime was, which was answered appropriately with the film’s title “Your Name”. Unfortunately for the person who asked, he got it the wrong way and responded with his name which was Ruben.
Check out the legendary screenshot below.
Somebody later took this story and did a bit of photoshop magic on an existing piece of artwork for Your Name which now features the word “Ruben”.
I still don’t have an idea who originally posted the Ruben artwork although he or she deserves a round of applause to make the whole scenario funnier.
