Singer-songwriter Abby Asistio reveals the new Maria Clara to the tune of modern kundiman

Singer-songwriter Abby Asistio is back!  And this time, she’s here to reintroduce the classic sound of Kundiman to the new generation with her latest single, “Maria Clara.”

Traditionally defined as a Filipino folk song used during serenades, Abby updates the Kundiman sound with a modern beat and her signature melodious way of singing. “Maria Clara”also conveys a timely message for Filipinas—and women in general—about love and relationships.

Abby, who’s also an alopecia awareness advocate, previously released songs about self-love and embracing one’s own definition of beauty. Her song “Beautiful”featured her in a music video without wearing a wig or any artificial hairpiece. She said that she did it to tell people with alopecia to “be open to embracing their uniqueness.”

The “Maria Clara”music video is directed by Gorio Vicuna and features Abby with members of the award-winning Philippine All-Stars in a dance sequence complementing her #ModernKundiman sound.
