Commercenter Alabang holds its first robotics competition, ROBOCON 2019

Commercenter Alabang, the mall in the heart of the South of Manila, challenges young Filipino inventors in the first ever Commercenter ROBOCON 2019.

Organized in partnership with RoboRAVE International and RoboRAVE Philippines, the robotics competition will be held on September 14, 2019 at Commercenter Alabang’s Activity Center and will be open to students from all over the country.

Young Filipino robotics enthusiasts from elementary through senior high school can join the different competitions in ROBOCON 2019. There will be three categories—Entrepreneurial, SumoBot and a-Maze-ing—each testing the abilities of these young trailblazers in the different facets of robotics. Their work will be judged based on purpose, function, marketability and strategic thinking.

“We at Commercenter Alabang are excited to offer our youth this platform where they can put their penchant for science and technology in action, literally,” said Leslie Tagle-Dinglasan, AVP for marketing of Commercenter Alabang. “Who knows? From this group of young tech game changers might come the next Elon Musk or Bill Gates. Robotics is the game of the future, and we are glad to contribute to the honing of the future A-players in this field.”

The Entrepreneurial category will challenge competing teams composed of three players in marketing a working, innovative robot to an audience including subject-matter experts. The robot must cost PHP150,000 or less to make and can be autonomous or remote-controlled. Any platform and design constraints will be verified by the organizers during the event, and winners will be determined through the casting of votes of all attendees and experts.

Elementary, junior and senior high school students will compete in the SumoBot challenge under their respective divisions. Each team of two players must design, build and program an autonomous robot that can push one or more opponent sumo robots off the elevated wrestling ring. The entry SumoBot must cost PHP75,000 or less and its base must not exceed 400 square centimeters, with no height limit. The toughest SumoBot to survive all rounds will be declared the winner.

The a-Maze-ing challenge will bring all the robotic tricks out of the bag as participants must build the fastest robot that can finish a raised wooden maze without falling off. Challenger teams composed of two players each must design an autonomous robot costing PHP75,000 or less and with a total volume not exceeding 65,030 cubic centimeters.

The robots must complete the maze within 120 seconds with the clock running backwards. Teams can attempt as many as 10 runs to get their best scores. All a-Maze-ing tracks are identical with approximate challenge dimensions.

The winning teams will be awarded with certificates, trophies and medals. They will also be invited to join the 2019 RoboRAVE International: Philippine Invitationals on October 25 to 27, 2019 for free, courtesy of RoboRAVE Philippines.
