Fans Petition Astronomers to name New Black Hole “Chris Cornell” in Honor of Late Rocker
A few days ago, several fans of rocker Chris Cornell and the band Soundgarden started a petition for astronomers to name the newly photographed Black Hole as Chris Cornell in honor of the fallen rock icon.
According to reports the petition was started by a certain Giuliana Jarrin, who picked Change.org as the platform for the petition.
She wrote:
I ask NASA, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration and all the astronomers and scientists involved in this discovery, to name this black hole after Chris Cornell. This would be a ‘surreal’ and amazing way to honor his life and his contribution to music.
Sadly, the petition fell to deaf ears despite being midly successful as the astronomers eventually settled with the name “Powehi”. The word means “embellished dark source of unending creation” in Hawaiian. This was because two of the eight telescopes that were used to photograph the black hole in outer space were in Hawaii.
